Transition is a part of life for all learners, whether it is moving to a new class, key stage or to a new school. We recognise that moving on can be difficult for children, especially so for those with SEND. Consequently, we work closely with parents/carers, children, staff and specialist transition workers to ensure transitions work as smoothly as possible.
New starters for Reception are given opportunities to meet with the Reception staff and the children will be able to visit the Reception classroom. A gradual approach is used to embed them into school life in September.
Transition within our school from class to class or Key Stage to Key Stage is supported so that the children have met with their new teacher wherever possible and have become familiar with their new classroom environment.
Planning for transition to KS3 will take place in the summer term. We begin consideration of transition for SEND children as early as possible to ensure adequate time for planning and preparation.
During Y6 information, agreed with parents/carers will be shared with the Transition worker and SENDCO of the receiving school. This information will outline the needs and support that has proved effective. Children visit their new school during the summer term of Y6; extra days/visits are arranged if we feel it will be helpful for some children. Staff from secondary schools also visit our school to begin building relationships with their new intake.
If you would like to discuss your SEND requirements in detail please contact the school to arrange an appointment.
